Our Purpose

A diagnosis is a beginning, not an explanation of a life.

The Global Relief & Support Corporation (GRS Corp) exists to enhance the lives of people and families impacted by autism. We work so that individuals on the autism spectrum can lead independent, dignified lives — valued for the abilities they bring, rather than measured against the ones they do not.

We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Clifton Park, New York, working with autistic people, parents, siblings, educators and neighbours across the state. Everything on this page is what that sentence means in practice.

Mission

To enhance the lives of people and families impacted by autism through advocacy, education, support services and community.

Vision

A community where autistic people live independent, dignified lives, and where their strengths are recognised as a matter of course.

Why this work exists

A diagnosis rarely arrives with instructions. Families are handed a word, a folder of paperwork and a list of services that may or may not have openings. The distance between getting an answer and getting help can be long, and it is usually the family that has to cross it alone — while also going to work, raising other children, and holding a household together.

GRS Corp exists to shorten that distance. We translate complicated systems into plain language, connect families to the people and programs already near them, and keep pressing — in schools, in agencies and in the wider community — for a world that expects autistic people to be part of it.

And we do this alongside autistic people, not on their behalf. Understanding is where it starts. Belonging is the point.

How the work connects

These are not four separate programs running in parallel. Each one makes the next one possible, and together they circle back to the thing we are actually trying to change: everyday quality of life.

The GRS Corp cycle of work Four pillars arranged in a clockwise circle — Awareness leads to Education, Education leads to Support, Support leads to Community, and Community returns to Awareness. At the centre of the circle is the shared outcome: quality of life. Outcome Quality of life Awareness Education Support Community
Awareness

People cannot support what they have never been asked to understand. Awareness opens the door.

Education

Attention becomes useful when it turns into practical knowledge families, teachers and clinicians can act on.

Support

Knowledge becomes relief when it reaches a real family: the right resource, the right contact, someone to call.

Community

Support lasts when it is shared. A connected community sends new voices back out to raise awareness again.

What our purpose looks like in practice

Purpose only counts when it shows up as something a family can use. These are the areas our work is organised around.

Advocacy

Championing the rights and needs of autistic people at every level — from a single school meeting to the policies that shape services statewide.

Education

Clear, accurate resources that build understanding and acceptance — written for the people who need them at the moment they need them.

Support services

Connecting families with the resources, networks and navigation help that already exist — so nobody has to discover the system from scratch.

Community

Networking and events that build belonging, so families meet people who already understand — and autistic people find their own peers.

Nature programs

Outdoor activities built around what autistic participants actually enjoy — unhurried, predictable, and designed with sensory needs in mind.

School collaboration

Partnering with schools to strengthen awareness and support, so a student's day is shaped by understanding rather than misreading.

An affiliates network

Local support is the only kind that reaches a kitchen table on a difficult evening. We are building a network of affiliates so that help is available close to home, while local voices still carry weight at the state and national level. It is the same purpose, repeated at every scale.

The values underneath it

Purpose tells you what we are for. These tell you how we intend to go about it.

  • Empowerment
  • Compassion
  • Inclusion
  • Innovation
  • Excellence
  • Respect

Purpose is something people carry out

A stated purpose is only as real as the people willing to act on it. If any of this matches what you care about, there is a place for you here — whether you have an afternoon a month, a professional skill, or a question you have not been able to get answered.
